.ug vs .com Domains: Main Differences

Are you struggling to decide between a .ug domain and a .com domain?

You’re not alone. This is one of the most difficult decisions that businesspeople and individuals must make when they want to build a website.

The difference between these domain extensions may seem simple on the surface: the .ug domain is local, while the .com domain is global. 

But choosing a .ug or a .com can affect your business positively or negatively.

The .ug domain is Uganda’s country code top-level domain (ccTLD). It shows that a website belongs to, or is strongly tied to, Uganda.

Different organizations, such as schools, NGOs, and government agencies, can become even more identifiable with subdomains such as .co.ug (for businesses), .ac.ug (for universities), and .go.ug (for government agencies), etc.

On the other hand, the .com domain is a generic top-level domain (gTLD). It was originally meant to be used by commercial businesses, but it has become the global default for almost every type of website, even those serving local audiences in their countries. 

Major global brands such as Amazon, Coca-Cola, Google, and others have .com websites.  Which is why many people automatically type “.com” when they think of a website.

But even those big brands know the importance of standing out in local markets, so they also use ccTLDs in most countries.

Coca-Cola has a presence in hundreds of countries, and in many of them, it uses ccTLDs. For example, in Kenya, it’s “cocacola.com/ke”. 

These local domains either host localized content or redirect back to the main .com.

But in some countries, Coca-Cola maintains its local presence through its distributor. For instance, in Uganda, you won’t find “coca-cola.ug”, but the bottler’s domain. 

Interestingly, Coca-Cola’s distributor in Uganda lists the countries it serves as sections of its .com site, rather than using individual ccTLDs.

Amazon.com

Amazon relies heavily on ccTLDs. For example, amazon.co.uk (UK), amazon.de (Germany), amazon.co.jp (Japan), amazon.in (India), and so on. Each ccTLD serves local customers in their local languages, currencies, and shipping options.

Meta

Other companies with a global presence, such as Facebook/Meta, approach ccTLDs differently. Meta maintains its global .com as its main website and uses directories to redirect people to local content or different language settings. For example, “de-de.facebook.com” redirects to German language and local content. 

Google, which previously had ccTLDs,  is also taking the same approach and will phase off the use of ccTLDs starting in 2025 to focus more on its global presence with “google.com”. 

So the pattern is clear:

  • .com is used to create global reach and recognition
  • ccTLDs (.ug, .uk, .de, etc.) are important for building trust, gaining a local SEO advantage, and for brand protection

  2. .com domains are globally recognized. But it’s harder to find short or catchy names with a .com domain, they have no built-in local SEO advantage, and they can be difficult to gain trust with if you’re trying to emphasize Ugandan identity.
