Are you trying to register a .ug domain but don’t know where to start?
You’re not alone. With so many domain registrars in the market, from local providers like i3C and Afriregister, global giants like GoDaddy, and a value-driven registrar like Truehost, it can be difficult to decide which domain registrars to trust.
The truth is, choosing a domain registrar will determine how much you pay, your renewal costs, the level of security protecting your site, the type of support you’ll receive when something goes wrong, and even how smooth the hosting is.
The problem? Domain registration prices vary wildly, from around UGX. 89,000 to over UGX. 200,000. In addition, the feature set you get also varies, and this could leave you paying so much money for very little value, and lock you into a lifetime of spending for every little add-on.
This guide will help you choose the best domain registrar by comparing their prices and features, and explaining the benefits and downsides of each one.
1) Truehost Uganda
Truehost is the cheapest domain registrar and hosting provider in Uganda. So if cost is your biggest concern, register your domain with Truehost.
Domain registration costs $30/year (around UGX. 106,000), and although this is higher than i3C, you spend way less to get your website online. Here’s how:
As with other registrars, you’ll still incur a hosting fee. But the great thing about Truehost is that if you buy a hosting package, you get a free domain, unlimited bandwidth, unlimited email accounts, and a free SSL certificate. What’s more, each hosting package comes with a lot of disk space: 30 GB for the starter plan, 50 GB for the pro plan, and unlimited disk space for the unlimited plan.

Truehost also offers flexible billing cycles, but the triennial (3-year) plan delivers the best savings. At just $1.50 per month (approximately UGX 5328), you pay around UGX 191,812 total for three years of hosting. That’s an incredibly low price point compared to what you’ll find with other registrars or hosting providers in Uganda, making Truehost one of the most affordable ways to get both a domain and hosting under one roof.
This offer is quite a steal for everyone, but especially small businesses, bloggers, or startups looking for quality service and simplicity at a lower price. Instead of wrestling with DNS settings, you can focus on getting your site live.
In addition, Truehost provides excellent customer service 24/7, so you’re not just dealing with a faceless global brand but with a team that understands the African and Ugandan market.
Best for: Anyone who wants the easiest, most affordable way to register and launch a .ug domain.
Benefits
- Lowest price in the market
- Free domain if you buy a hosting package
- Buy domain + hosting together for convenience
- Reliable and responsive customer support
Downsides
- Still building global “prestige”
2) i3C (Infinity Computers & Communications Company)
i3C isn’t just a registrar. It’s the actual registry for .ug domains. That means when you buy directly from them, you’re going straight to the source. They’ve been managing Uganda’s domains since the very beginning of websites in Uganda.
i3C provides a full suite of services, including hosting, strong security features like DNSSEC (to prevent DNS hijacking) and registrar locks (to stop unauthorized transfers). They also promise instant domain activation and 24/7 support.
At just $25/year (UGX 89,000), i3C provides domain registration at the lowest price in Uganda. However, even with this low registration price, i3C is very costly when you add hosting and security. Hosting costs $12 monthly (approximately UGX 42,620), which adds up to $141 annually (around UGX 500,000). This is 4 times more than it costs to host with Truehost for 3 years. The SSL certificates also cost between $17.95/year and $995/year (UGX 64,000 to UGX 3,533,902.73), which is also quite costly.

And even at such a high price, you get very little disk space (5 GB for their starter package) as compared to 30GB with Truehost, and you can’t host multiple websites.
Best for: Institutions, government-related bodies, or larger businesses that want the assurance of dealing directly with the registry and don’t mind spending extra on security and other add-ons.
Benefits
- Direct registry access (you’re buying at the source)
- Strong security (DNSSEC, registrar lock)
- 24/7 local support available
- Long track record with .ug domains
Downsides
- The interface may feel technical for beginners
- Very costly
3) Afriregister
Afriregister is another strong option for handling all your online needs in one place, from domains to hosting, SSL certificates, and email. Registering a .ug domain with them costs UGX 129,500/year, which puts them in the middle price-wise.
Although anyone can register a .ug domain, if you try to register one from outside Uganda on Afriregister’s site. If you do, you’ll see this error message at the top of the domain search page.

That said, if you need help with any registration issues, you can contact them through email, phone, and WhatsApp, using the contact details located at the top of the page.
Although Afriregister offers a full-service approach, they have some strict terms of service, like no refunds on domain registrations and account suspensions for late payments. So, stay on top of your renewals to avoid surprises.
Best for: NGOs, SMEs, or anyone who wants their domain bundled with hosting and security services.
Benefits
- Bundled services: hosting, SSL, email, domains
- 24/7 customer support
- Local expertise, regional and international presence
Downsides
- No refunds on domain registrations
- Account suspension for late payments
- Costly
4) INWX
INWX is based in Germany, and is one of the leading international registrars that offers .ug domains at $60.42 (around UGX 213,124.80) and renewals at $50.32. There’s also a one-time fee of $10.09 (around UGX 35,000) for new registrations, although it’s not clear what this fee is for.

This pricing is a lot higher than what it costs to register a domain with Truehost, and you only get a domain for it. Add on hosting at $6/ month (approximately UGX 255,000/year), and the service becomes very costly.
Furthermore, although you get data protection through DNSSEC (Domain Name System Security Extensions) for that price, you don’t receive WHOIS privacy for .ug domains, which means ownership details will be visible to the public.
That said, INWX is still a less costly option than i3C, which is a local registrar.
What’s more, INWX might be an international player, but it maintains a direct connection to the Ugandan registry, which means registrations and transfers happen smoothly without third-party intermediaries.
INWX allows domain registrations and renewals for periods ranging from 1 to 5 years, giving you flexibility depending on how long you want to commit. It also supports transfers in real time, and renewal on transfer is not required, which keeps the process clean and efficient.
Best for: Corporations and other entities that aren’t on a tight budget, and anyone who wants DNSSEC security but for whom WHOIS privacy isn’t a concern.
Benefits
- DNSSEC support for stronger protection
- Reputation for reliability
- Solid infrastructure
- Internationally recognized
Downsides
- Slightly higher cost than local registrars
- May feel technical for beginners
- Limited local Ugandan presence
5) Crystal Webhosting
Crystal Webhosting is locally based in Uganda. Its .ug domains cost UGX 100,000/year, which is around what you get with Truehost.
Like most of the registrars on this list, you can search and add a domain to a cart, and during checkout, you’ll be prompted to buy hosting.

What makes Crystal appealing is that it provides domain theft protection and DNS management tools at no extra cost. You also get access to Softaculous, a one-click installer for apps like WordPress.
However, even though registration costs are average, it still costs a lot more to host with Crystal Web per year than if you choose Truehost’s triennial hosting.
In addition, you get very little disk storage with the hosting packages from Crystalwebhosting. Even the ultra package (@ ugx 150,000/year) only allows you 15 GB of storage, and the corporate only gets 20 GB.
Best for: Small businesses in Uganda that want local service with built-in domain security and access to Softaculous apps. But be aware of the lower storage space.
Benefits
- Domain theft protection is included
- Free DNS management tools
- Local registrar with Ugandan focus
Downsides
- Softaculous gives you access to 400+ apps
- Low storage space (1 GB for their lowest price plan and up to 20 GB for Corporate)
6) Isazeni Solutions
Finally, there’s Isazeni Solutions. Isazeni offers a wide range of services, from digital marketing, to branding, ICT support, programming, and software and hardware management.
But when it comes to domain registration, they might not be the best choice. First off, Isazeni charges a higher fee of about UGX 155,500/year, which is much steeper compared to Truehost or Crystal. Isazeni bundles in SSL certificates and privacy protection into the pricing, but then so does Truehost.
Secondly, Isazeni Solutions doesn’t offer hosting. So after you buy your domain, you have to start shopping around for a host. Thirdly, to register a domain, you have to contact them to do it for you, prolonging the registration process unnecessarily.
All the same, if you can manage to work in more of their other services into the domain cost, then Isazeni Solutions might be worth a try.
Best for: if you only want to register a domain, don’t mind getting hosting elsewhere, and are interested in other digital marketing services.
Benefits
- Includes SSL and privacy protection
- Local Ugandan provider
- Added security and trust
- Good for organizations with compliance needs
Downsides
- Higher price point
- Limited extras beyond the domain and security
